This is a plain, opinionated directory of the city's commercial galleries: the long-running contemporary rooms on Julia Street, the Royal Street row in the Quarter, the experimental spaces out St. Claude, and a few stops uptown. No rankings, no sponsored order — the rooms shuffle on every visit, the way a good gallery crawl never runs the same way twice.
Hours shift with the season and openings run late. When something matters to you, ring the gallery before you walk over.

Collective gallery and studio building a block off the avenue; a new artist or group takes the walls each month. The kind of stop where you meet the person who hung the show.
3718 St. Claude Ave. · Tue–Sun, 12–5
Nonprofit gallery and literary-arts hub (formerly Press Street) run by the Antenna Collective — exhibitions, a print shop and press at Paper Machine, residencies, and public programs. Each fall it also runs the free St. Claude Art Bus, looping the avenue's galleries from this doorstep.

Artist-run collective gallery; four rooms, rotating monthly shows, zero white-cube chill. The clearest window onto what younger New Orleans is actually making.

Brandan “BMike” Odums' vast warehouse of large-scale Black portraiture and murals. Not a commercial gallery in the Julia Street sense — more a civic monument you walk through. Book ahead.

Antenna's second location: print shop, press, bookstore, and gallery. Books, posters, and editions at prices students can pay — worth the drive down-avenue.

Delightfully quirky Bywater room for local artists — carnival-miniature spirit, neighborhood crowd. Pair it with StudioBE up Royal.

Surreal, abstract, and modernist-leaning program with deep local roots; the Magazine corridor stop pairs well with an afternoon of shop-gazing uptown.
Julia, Camp, and Magazine galleries open new shows together on the first Saturday of each month, October through May. Free, walkable, and the single best recurring art night in the city.
One Saturday each August the whole Arts District throws a block party — galleries open late, the street closes, everybody wears white. Go early for the art, stay late for the crowd.
Daytime open-house with live music in participating galleries. Check the Arts District Association calendar the week of; lineups post late and change fast.
Park once. In the Arts District, start at Camp and Julia and work toward the river; in the Quarter, walk Royal between Canal and Esplanade; on St. Claude, string two or three spaces together and drive between clusters. Time it for a Second Saturday, when the avenue's spaces open together — and watch for the free annual Art Bus each fall, looping from Antenna's door at 3718 St. Claude. Galleries are free; openings are friendlier than they look — walk in, look slowly, ask one question about one work.
If you're buying: most rooms take cards, many offer payment plans without advertising them, and August (White Linen season) is when Julia Street discounts quietly appear.
